Project Information:
The CHOP PAOB project was located at the corner of East Service Drive and Health Sciences Drive on the last undeveloped parcel at the old convention center site. The project was surrounded by existing buildings on the north and west and by Health Sciences Drive on the south and East Service Drive on the east side. The site was also dissected by an access ramp to the existing parking garage. With excavations reaching a maximum depth of 60′ below grade, this was one of the deepest excavations ever undertaken in the City of Philadelphia in an extremely small footprint. This project also had the two main ingredients of a difficult excavation, rock and groundwater. Rock was typically encountered at 20′ below grade and groundwater was typically encountered at 35′ below grade. Our crews excavated over 20,000 cubic yards of rock, installed 70 temporary tieback anchors, 52 permanent tieback anchors, 100 soil nails and 55 rock bolts. They also installed 6400 SF of temporary shotcrete wall and 9500 SF of permanent shotcrete wall. This project highlighted our ability to handle a deep and difficult excavation with rock and ground water using all of our excavation support capabilities.
